Years after the death of His Royal Highness, Eze Michael Nwadike Egwuonwu (Awgu 1), Eze Ogboha 1 of Ogboli Ohaja Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, villagers say normalcy is yet to fully return, amid concerns over insecurity and the safety of members of the late traditional ruler’s family.Eze Egwuonwu died at a time of heightened tension in southeastern Nigeria over separatist’s agitation and the government’s security response. Family and community sources say the traditional ruler had attempted to mediate between the separatists and government authorities, advocating dialogue and due process. His death was alleged to be connected to those efforts, although the circumstances have not been independently established. The situation, according to residents, has continued to affect the community’s social and economic life. A son of the late monarch, Prince Chukwunonso Egwuonwu, is reportedly living away from the community after allegedly receiving threats to his life and that of other family members. His current whereabouts could not be substantiated, though sources revealed that he may have left Nigeria for safety. The concerns come as Nigeria marks 66 years of independence and 56 years since the end of the Nigerian Civil War, a conflict whose political and ethnic legacies continue to influence debates over self-determination and security in the Southeast. While self-determination is dear to many South Easterners, and counter forces from the Nigerian state, residents of Ogboli Ohaja believe they should not be left caught between separatist tensions and insecurity. With no official statement available from security agents on the reported incidents involving the community and the late traditional ruler’s family, residents are calling on the Enugu State and Federal Governments to intervene, strengthen security and investigate unresolved concerns. For the people of Ogboli Ohaja, the hope is that the memory of their late traditional ruler will ultimately become a catalyst for peace, justice and the restoration of a community they say has endured uncertainties.
